Wii rumours abound after Nintendo conference

A massive slew of rumours is currently circulating pertaining to Nintendo's mysterious press summit held in an abandoned castle on the top of a cliff in Transylvania. Lightning and everything.

Those rumour-mongering scamps at NeoGAF have posted up a message purportedly from a 'press insider', presumably given to them in a dark alley in some kind of swanky looking briefcase.

There's rather a lot of information, so I'll give you a condensed version - remember, these 'facts' are completely unsubstantiated for the most part so they might not be true:

Metroid Prime 3 will have downloadable extra missions, suits, weapons, and so on.

Smash Bros uses either classic controller / GC controller or a Wii remote / nunchuck combination.

Super Mario Galaxy allows you to explore the interior of giant planets - the game will also use WiiConnect24. Somehow.

A trailer reel was shown featuring ( amongst others ) Mario Kart Wii, Vision Red ( a new RPG from Nintendo ), Animal Crossing, Wii Music, Wii Health.

Finally, an epic-sounding video was shown that finishes with Link and a massive triforce 'smashing into pieces.' ( I love that bit ).

How plausible is all that then? It could be educated guesswork, as nothing sounds particularly unexpected. It's unlikely Nintendo will comment on any of it as the information they released at the press summit is currently under embargo.

It's interesting, but I'm going to wait for the official word before I get too excited.

You can never trust anyone these days.

Lara Croft coming to Wii

Eidos has confirmed to IGN that Lara Croft: Tomb Raider Anniversary will be coming to the Wii.

"The Wii is a hugely innovative games console and we wanted to make a special version of Anniversary to appeal to Wii owners," said Kathryn Clements, senior brand manager for Tomb Raider at Eidos. "The Wii Remote and nunchuk controllers allow Wii gamers to control Lara in brand new, unique ways, and there are plenty of new features, to be revealed soon, which will ensure Anniversary really hits the spot - literally."

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider Anniversary will feature Wii-specific controls, though Eidos hasn't elaborated on any other differences between the Wii version and the PS2 and PSP editions. The title is scheduled for release later in the year.

Command & Conquer coming to the Wii?

Although PC gamers have been able to enjoy the return of real-time strategy juggernaut Command & Conquer for weeks, Xbox 360 owners who’ve been patiently waiting for the console version (due for release tomorrow) will have to wait for just a little longer, at least until next week we’re told, due to shipping delays overseas. Until then, Senior Producer Mike Glosecki made himself available to provide hands-on demonstrations of the Xbox 360 version of the game, as well as answer a few of our questions.

“The console version is really easy to pick up and play,” says Glosecki, “We took all of the feedback we received about the controls in Lord of the Rings: Battle For Middle Earth II and implemented it into the interface for Command & Conquer 3… so it’s faster, more responsive and intuitive…” He then proceeded to demonstrate how the in-game cursor can be set to automatically drift towards units (similar to auto-targeting) with varying degrees of ‘magnetism.’

But is there a possibility of seeing this on PlayStation 3? “We haven’t officially confirmed anything, but I don’t see why it’s not feasible,” he said. “The controls are practically the same.” Indeed, the PlayStation 3’s Sixaxis control pad isn’t the only thing that’s a great fit with the Xbox 360 interface – it also happens to run in high-definition resolutions as well.

A Wii version of the game is a slightly trickier proposition, though. “There isn’t as much under the hood,” says Glosecki, “so it obviously won't look as good. But as far as control goes, I don’t see why it can’t be done,” Although EA hasn’t made any official announcement about a Wii version, he conceded that the Wii’s impressive sales numbers are difficult to ignore and therefore worth investigating.

As for future updates for the Xbox 360 version of C&C 3, Glosecki commented that new maps will be made available on the Xbox Live Marketplace over the coming months. “We’re still talking with Microsoft about the finer details… They basically make a recommendation on how much we should charge for the content, but the ultimate decision is made on our side.”

Ghost Squad to hit the Wii

With a rumoured 4 game modes, training, "Special", multiplayer and arcade, Ghost Squad looks to be the Wii's first online FPS.
There are only a small amount of details at present, but we do know that there are 25 weapons and that it will be an "on-rails" shooter (similar to arcade classic, Time Crisis). Within each of the levels, there are a number of available routes for the player to choose. Weapons to choose from include the pistol, shotgun, machine guns, submachine guns and even a cross bow. The Wii version, although very similar to the arcade version, has a few exclusive goodies, you can now disarm bombs and rescue hostages using the Wiimote.
There will also be a 4-player multiplayer mode.
