Love Thy Wii is NO MORE...

Unfortunately lack of time does not permit for any more updates of what started out as a cool project. Plus, someone else apparently decided to "borrow" the name of the blog (which started in January 2007) and in February 2008 decided to register lovethywii.com. In a way, that feels good (it always feels good when others copy you) so thanks whoever you are.

Thanks to all who stopped by at some point.

WiiWare/Wii Fit release date announced

Nintendo has placed release dates on the upcoming WiiWare game service and Wii Fit.

WiiWare is expected to debut on Monday, May 12th. WiiWare will open game development for the Wii, giving smaller developers (as well as larger ones) a creative outlet for their games on the console.

About WiiWare, from Nintendo:
“Through WiiWare, Nintendo hopes to offer developers a virtual laboratory that serves as a breeding ground for new games, which encourages great ideas that creators always wanted to develop. The combination of low development barriers and unique game experiences found only on Wii should enable developers to try new ideas with lower risk in a quicker, more creative and affordable way.”

One title from Square Enix coming on WiiWare is Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King. Telltale (known for its Sam & Max games) will also be releasing episodic gaming via WiiWare. XGen is another game developer putting out its games via WiiWare. Watch for the first batch of games on May 12th.

Wii Fit, with the included Balance Board is expected on the week following the launch of WiiWare, on May 19th.

Apparent third-party Wiimote makes its purple debut

It's not the first third-party Wiimote we've seen, but if the very purple device you see above is what it purports to be, it could well be the very first to actually hit the market, albeit in Europe-only for the time being. Dubbed the "Riimote," this one comes to us from peripheral maker Snakebyte, which apparently isn't providing many details on the remote just yet but is promising that it'll be available in Europe on Feburary 8th for the not-so-bargain price of €39.99 (or just under $60).

Those slightly less nostalgic about a certain purple game console than some of us can also rest assured that the controller will also be available in basic black, although it seems you'll have to stick with the official gear if you want to keep everything coordinated.

Wii Music: Details

Wii Music was first shown at E3 in 2006, and was hailed as one of the most innovative games at the conference. Classic themes like The Legend of Zelda’s overworld tune were conducted and performed by an orchestra of Miis, two Wii Remotes were used to play the drums and the trumpet could be played in an exaggerated jazz fashion by changing the angle of the Remote… and then everything went quiet. There were rumours that Wii Music had been cancelled to focus on other projects.

According to a translation, we will be seeing classic Nintendo themes as well as brand new ones. Over 40 instruments will be available, including folk and bass guitars, maraccas, marimbas as well as the option to conduct your orchestra (as Miyamoto did at E3 2006). Each of these instruments will include their own unique controls (including strumming a guitar with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, and dual-Remotes acting as drumsticks), so there’s no need to worry about repetition. The gameplay revolves around play sessions, with six parts playable together (4 players and 2 CPU-controlled players).

Wii Music currently has a extremely vague release date of 2008.

Nyko's wireless Wii nunchuk wins CNET's CES gaming award

Nyko's wireless nunchuk peripheral was awarded CNET's best in gaming at CES this year. The wireless nunchuk "connects" through a dongle attached to the bottom of the Wiimote (seen above) and runs off two AAA batteries which allegedly provide 30 hours of use; the cost is $30 and should be out by late January or early February.

Nyko actually introduced many new peripherals at this year's CES. Coincidentally this would be the second year in a row that Nyko introduced a relatively useful product for the Wii, last year they came through with the Wiimote charge station which we're told has sold very well. Of course, not every Nyko product has to be reasonable, the Wii Party station is still one of the most atrociously awesome things we saw in the past year.

Nyko reveals Wireless Nunchuk

Nyko will beat Nintendo to the punch with a wireless Nunchuck alternative. Set to make a public debut at CES next month, Nyko's Wireless Nunchuck will mirror most aspects of the first-party model but will finally cut the cord between the controllers.

Nyko's Wireless Nunchuck will employ 2.4-GHz wireless to communicate with a receiver module that jacks into the Wiimote's usual Nunchuck port. As the pictures suggest, power buttons on both the receiver and Wireless Nunchuck will turn the connection on and off.

In terms of gameplay, the Wireless Nunchuck should function just like the first-party option, as Nyko looks to be remaining true to Nintendo's general layout and button locations. Pricing and final release information will be announced at CES, so until then, enjoy these exclusive first pictures and start looking forward to even greater freedom in Wii gameplay.

Nintendo to pull advertising?

There have been reports that Nintendo of Europe may pull their TV ad campaign in the UK because of the Wii’s overzealous popularity and the Big N’s struggle to meet demand during the holiday season. Personally, it makes sense to pull ads right now because word of mouth is free!

Make $150 by NOT playing your Wii for one month!

In the words of Wii owner JJ Hendricks:
"I am considering selling my Wii now for the going rate of $590 and then buying another one back in January for the average price in August through October of $350. After fees I would have enough money left over to buy Smash Bros. Brawl and 10 NES virtual consoles games. A very tempting possibility."

1,400 Wii consoles sold in 10 Minutes?

It’s Wii’s second Christmas, and there’s a strong push behind the console. Will it be the best selling console this Christmas? I think so, but how about you?

Amazon sold 1,400 consoles in just ten minutes, when their stock was renewed last week. A story not so hard to belive, as the Wii becomes harder to find each day.

The craze has predictably pushed up prices of the console - some are selling on eBay and Amazon for over $400. Just as Reggie said, there just aren’t enough consoles for everyone.
“There is a steady flow of Wiis into the country between now and Christmas. It will not be enough to meet all consumer demand but is sufficient for retailers to enjoy good levels of sales in the run-up to Christmas.”

So keep an eye out for Wiis in your area, and hope you’re one of the lucky ones.

Manhunt 2 could be released as digital download

Rockstar's Manhunt 2 could release in the UK, but as a digital download, it's emerged.

It's all to do with a legal loophole in the UK's 1984 Video Recordings Act, which only covers physical products. An age-certification rating is apparently not required for online digital downloads.

Manhunt 2 has been refused age-certification twice by the BBFC. Following the original refusal, Rockstar submitted a revised version of the game but not enough was done in the eyes of the classification body.

However, while the release of Manhunt 2 is theoretically possible, we very much doubt the console companies would allow a game without to BBFC rating to grace their machines.

And of course, how the hell would you get the digital download onto PS2 and Wii anyway?

Scaleform Announces Middleware for Wii

Scaleform has just announced that it’ll bring it’s Scaleform GFx middleware over to the Nintendo Wii which will benefit the console through media performance changes.

The technology in Scaleform GFx allows for high performance media since the middleware is compatible with other visual-tools such as Adobe Flash. By taking vector shapes and tessellating the data into triangles, the result will enable fast hardware accelerated rendering.

“We made sure the Scaleform GFx architecture works well with existing game engines on Wii, as well as new ones, said Brendan Iribe, president and CEO of Scaleform.

“Moreover, Scaleform GFx delivers a range of cursor features designed to take advantage of the Wii Remote’s enormous potential. With Scaleform GFx, developers can have the best of both worlds: artist-based data-driven content and hardware-accelerated scalable graphics.”

Mario and Sonic at the Olympics Game Details

Sega today revealed details of the upcoming game Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for the DS and Wii. The game is set to include 20 Olympic events (detailed below) played in different arenas.

As we posted the story a few days ago, the game will include 16 characters, 8 from the world of Mario and 8 from the world of Sonic. The Wii controls are created specifically to replicate the actions that offer the best results for each event which include:

Fencing – Individual epée
Archery
Shooting – Skeet
Gymnastics - Trampoline
Gymnastics - Vault
Field - High Jump
Field - Pole Vault
Field - Long Jump
Field - Triple Jump
Field – Javelin Throw
Field - Hammer Throw
Rowing – Single Sculls
Table Tennis - Singles
Aquatics – 100m Freestyle
Aquatics – 4×100m Freestyle
Track – 110m and 400m Hurdles
Track – 4×100m Relay
Track –100m and 400m

The controls are simple swinging the Wii Remote to execute a Hammer Thow and replicating swimming strokes using both controllers.

With four playing styles to choose from, players can decide their strategy: all-around, technical, speed, and power similar to what we saw in Mario Strikers - for example: Mario and Amy (All-around), Peach and Tails (Technical), Sonic and Yoshi (Speed), and Knuckles and Bowser (Power).

Players will be able to choose and try out, in both single and multiplayer mode, each event individually with Single Match mode (where players can choose their event and play until they score top marks). They can also compete for the highest overall score in a series of events in Circuit mode (where players can either create their own circuit by choosing the individual events, choose a pre-determined circuit, or randomly generate a circuit).

If you still want more there’s the single-player Mission mode where you can earn top marks on challenges. Additionally, gamers can learn about the history of the Olympic Games through trivia, quizzes, and mini-games and unlock all-new facts and figures from past Olympic Games in the Gallery - not sure we’ll be spending too much time on that.
